Central Ohio Orchid Society Meeting

September 17, 2020 - 7:30 pm

Dr. Freudenstein is Professor and Chair of the Department of Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology at Ohio State.  He grew up in Michigan and had the good fortune to have as his high school biology teacher Fred Case, author of Orchids of the Western Great Lakes Region and an authority on native orchids.  He obtained his B. S. in Botany at the University of Michigan and his PhD at Cornell, where he worked on the leafless orchid genus Corallorhiza and its relatives.  He subsequently had postdoctoral positions at the University of Copenhagen and Harvard University, where he worked on relationships among the epidendroid orchids.  Over the past 25 years he has continued to work on orchid systematics projects, as well as on Ericaceae (the blueberry family) and wild gingers (Asarum) and has trained graduate students who now have faculty positions and work on various aspects of flowering plant diversity.
